DAILY SKINCARE MUSTS

Look after your skin and it will repay you with constant compliments!
Using the Fair & Flawless® Skin Whitening System as directed on a daily basis is one of several factors that can help ensure beautifully healthy, radiantly smooth skin. In addition to controlling melanin production and whitening existing color, this also ensures your skin receives the moisturizing, toning, cleansing, exfoliating and protection from the elements that it requires each day.

Other important contributors to healthy skin include:
•  Healthy diet
•  Exercise
•  Regular sleep patterns
•  Stress management

Eat healthily every day
Too many chocolates and fatty foods can cause acne and blackheads. Alcohol and cigarettes can create a generally dull looking, unhealthy complexion and early aging. Aim for a diet rich in anti-oxidants. Enjoy vegetables, fruits and fiber and drink lots of water – as much as 8 glasses a day – to help hydrate from within.

Exercise every day
Skin is a living, breathing organ – and exercise helps keep all the body's organs in peak condition. Exercise also encourages good circulation, which affects skin's appearance and is important for skin rejuvenation. Finally, and not to be overlooked, a good work-out or jog is an excellent antidote to stress build-up!

Follow regular sleep patterns
Burning the candle at both ends can wreak havoc on your skin. Try to get at least 7 hours sleep each night.

Learn to manage stress
Stress makes skin feel tight and look dull, and can create lines and wrinkles. Practice stress management techniques like deep breathing and visualization. Exercise frequently and consider taking up yoga or tai chi. And always remember the power of a good laugh with a friend – it's good for every part of you, including your skin!

SKINCARE BASICS

Your skin can be your greatest asset – protect it!
Your skin is your body's largest and most complex organ, covering a remarkable 10 square feet area on average and weighing around 7 pounds. It contains two principal layers – the epidermis and the dermis.

A living and breathing organ, also contains a remarkable 300 million skin cells, which are continually renewing.

Skin regeneration usually takes between 50 and 75 days in total, although the process can be slowed down or sped up by certain skin conditions and skin treatments. Optimizing this skin rejuvenation process is key to healthy skin and is one of the primary factors that account for the breakthrough results of the Fair & Flawless® Whitening System.

How to encourage skin rejuvenation
•  Cleanse regularly. Sweat and pollutants can clog pores, creating blackheads and blemishes, so it's particularly important to wash your face after exercise and before going to sleep.
•  Use a gentle but thorough exfoliate like the Fair & Flawless® Exfoliating/Whitening Bar Soap . There is no need to use a facial scrub. Harsh rubbing is unnecessary and can cause skin irritation.
•  Moisturize regularly to keep skin nourished and young, and protect against the effects of aging.
•  Protect against the sun. UV exposure not only increases melanin production, it can also lead to premature aging and skin cancer. Always use a sun screen. The Fair & Flawless® Body Whitener for daytime use includes a sun screen to help ensure thorough protection.
•  Protect against environmental pollutants, which contain free radicals. Free radicals can reduce your skin's collagen, leading to dull and dry skin and wrinkles. Ensure your diet is rich in vitamins A, E and C. These are anti-oxidants which attack free radicals. You will also find these vitamins in many of our products.

SKIN PIGMENTATION CONDITIONS

Causes and treatments
The pigmentation in our skin is caused by melanin, which is created by melanocyte cells in the superficial epidermis layer of our skin. Melanin is helpful when it protects our skin's deeper layers from sun damage, but causes problems when production is excessive or – in some cases – insufficient.

Insufficient production leads to white patches, and is known as Hypopigmentation.

Excessive production causes dark patches and blotchy skin tone. This is called Hyperpigmentation. Some people are also born with pigmented lesions. Hyperpigmentation can also be caused by over-exposure to sun and by certain drugs or chemicals. Even certain cosmetics and perfumes can be at fault, particularly those containing chemicals that create photosensitivity. Although these discolored patches usually fade naturally over time, fading can be accelerated by the use of Fair & Flawless® products.

Common Hyperpigmentation disorders can include:
•  Enlarged dark freckles
•  ‘Café au lait' brown birthmarks
•  Moles
•  Contact dermatitis hyperpigmentation
•  Seborrhoeic warts
•  Solar lentigenes

Enlarged dark freckles are usually caused by sun damage and can grow 10 times in size. Custom formulations from the Fair & Flawless® Skin Whitening System will result in visible improvements within two weeks and significant fading within 6 months.

In addition to the conditions we've just discussed, hormonal changes such as pregnancy can also lead to an increase in melanin stimulating cells – melanocyte. This can result in a very common pigmentation disorder known as Melasma.

Clinically termed Choasma, Melasma occurs in as many as 50% to 70% of all pregnancies. It is most common among darker-skinned individuals and can be made worse by sun exposure.

Melasma typically occurs:
•  Around the jaw
•  On cheeks
•  On the central forehead and upper lip

The discoloration on the face can cover an area from the hairline to the jaw-line, which is why the condition is often referred to as the ‘mask of pregnancy'.

Hormonal changes among women taking oral contraceptives can also contribute to Melasma. To help avoid Melasma, use a sunblock throughout pregnancy and when taking hormonal supplements such as the pill.

Although Melasma most commonly afflicts women, men are unfortunately not entirely immune! Approximately 10% of Melasma sufferers are in fact male. In these instances, the condition is invariably a result of sun exposure.

If you have Melasma, use the Fair & Flawless® Skin Whitening System to fade pigmentation spots until they match and blend naturally in with your normal skin tone.
