Melanin is your skin's ally – and the enemy!
The melanin in your skin is there for a reason. When your skin is in contact with the sun's potentially harmful UV rays, melanin helps protects the inner layers from damage.

Unfortunately, some people produce much more melanin than is required. In others, melanin production suddenly goes into overload after excessive UV exposure or after contact with chemicals or pollutants. Even certain cosmetics and perfumes can cause Melanin overload, particularly when they contain ingredients that create photosensitivity.

Melanin production is also commonly affected by hormonal changes, such as those occurring in pregnancy or during use of oral contraceptives.

The result of excessive melanin production is unfortunately easy to see: dark pigmented areas, blotches and spots.

Discourage melanin production

•  Always wear a sunscreen. During pregnancy or when taking oral contraceptives, you may even want to wear a complete sun block.
•  Choose clothing that provides added protection from the sun: a hat, loose sleeves, etc.
•  When the sun is intense, stay in the shade as much as possible - especially between 10 – 2pm.

Encourage good circulation
•  Skin needs a healthy supply of oxygen-rich blood for radiant appearance and to enhance the skin renewal process. This also allows for optimum healing of acne and faster smoothing of scars and blemishes.
•  The chemicals in cigarette smoke can reduce the oxygen in your blood by almost 40% and lead to sluggish circulation. These chemicals also inhibit the body's healing ability, with the result that scars and blemishes may take longer to fade. Smokers will always have less healthy skin than non-smokers!
•  Exercise improves circulation. Try to exercise regularly. You don't have to join a club – try swimming, dancing, or even just walking up the stairs sometimes, instead of always taking the elevator!

Eat and drink healthily
•  Vitamins A, E and C are anti-oxidants and important for keeping skin in tip-top condition and protecting against aging. Leafy green vegetables, bright red and yellow fruits and vegetables, whole grains and nuts are all good sources.
•  Drink lots of water. Water helps to keep you hydrated from within. It is also important for promoting healthy circulation.

Take good care of your skin
•  Keep your skin gently cleansed, using the Fair & Flawless® Anti-microbial soap and warm but not hot water. Gently massage the lather over your skin and then rinse completely. Two or three times a week, replace the Anti-microbial soap with the Fair & Flawless® Exfoliating/Whitening bar soap. This helps to remove dead skin cells and encourages healthy circulation.

Ensure your skin is well moisturized and protected from the elements by using Fair & Flawless Whitening Cream for daytime use – or a custom formulated product for day use. This will help your skin stay replenished and hydrated, while the whitening ingredients fade away dark blotches and even out discolored areas.
